Interesting book for those that want to delve into exploring pictorial effects. Edwin Smith is one of my favourite photographers, so I bought the book on the strength of this.
The book covers the 'lazy shutter', distortions, mirrors, ghosts and doubles, photomontage, toning and solarisation, printing on special surfaces and the use of table-top created miniature figures.
At first blush I thought it was a bit gimmicky. But actually, practising some of these effects from this light-hearted book helps you to understand the limitations of the process you are trying to master. So I have become a fan of this book.
A rather nice thing: the preface written by Olive Cook about Edwin Smith, reminding us that he 'lived by looking'.
