An advanced text for printers, one which often gets mentioned.
"One can be an entirely competent printer yet still not know how to make quality prints", says Ctein in his introduction. Quite so.
Taking us through the differences between how we see and how films see and how prints see is a good way into the discussion about how we need to be able to visualise the end product as a print.
Ctein then takes us through calibration, enlarging issues, matching film to prints, contrast control and the issues of permanence.
Sometimes the detailed examples are no longer that helpful since the materials used are no longer available. But the underlying principles remain valid.
Quite a difficult read for any novice, but pays careful attention.
